- Oh ye of such little faith...
-
- AT&T began work on the V.34 "extension" about the time 28.8 was first
- being introduced.
-
- USR has added support for it, fully compatible with AT&T's
- implementation.
-
- Motorola recently added support for it in their new "Premier" model.
-
- Within the last month, Multi-Tech has added support for
- it and theirs too is compatible with AT&T's, USR's, and Motorola's so
- someone must have some sheet music someplace, as they're all humming
- the same tune. All that is, except Rockwell.
-
- The Rockwell-based modems are not humming this tune because their DSP
- (data pumps) are all mask-programmed. There is no firmware chip or
- flash upgrade available, nor will there be. Rockwell-based modem
- owners are for the most part left to sit on a tack. Rockwell-based
- modem manufacturers who wish to add 33.6 to their product capabilities
- must change out the data pump chip along with the firmware prom.
- That's a little tough to do since the data pumps are mostly all
- soldered in. As far as I know, only Supra has mentioned it, but it's
- still going to take a new data pump chip. Existing Supras out there
- are stuck in 3rd gear.
-
- The manufacturers offering it (33.6) are those manufacturers with
- their DSP code residing within their firmware microcode, be it chip or
- flash upgradeable. To my knowledge, none of the Rockwell-based
- manufacturers use this approach. By designing with flash or firmware
- upgradeable DSPs, the manufacturer is leaving the door open for future
- speed enhancements.
-
- Perhaps it's poetic justice; a "PAYBACK" to Rockwell and the likes of
- Dennis Hayes for unleashing their proprietary "v.fc" mutation upon an
- unsuspecting and trusting public a couple years ago. What goes around,
- comes around.
-
-
-
- I'm here to tell you that 31.2 and 33.6 actually do work, quite well
- in fact but alas you do require somewhat exquisite phone line
- conditions. If you're unable to achieve 28.8 now, then no, 33.6 will
- likely be unattainable by you. However, other technology enhancements
- incorporated into these 33.6 "upgrades" actually afford two
- "33.6-capable" modems to in many cases achieve a higher level of
- performance through modification of the symbol table (symbol size
- actually). Thus if your connect speeds have characteristicly been,
- for example, 24000, with the new firmware it is not uncommon to see
- this improve to 26400. Similarly many users report their heretofore
- 26.4 connects are frequently now achieving 28.8. Alas, not everyone
- sees the performance increase, tho most do - provided there are
- "upgraded-to-V34-plus" at both ends of the call.
